In my case, as a mentor to CEO's, directors, senior executives and entrepreneurs my role is to provide a safe space in Surrey or London where my clients can take a step back to examine and explore what really matters to them.
How does a professional mentor work?
I create an environment where the client feels heard and understood through total acceptance and non-judgmental listening. I will ask questions they may not have considered before, challenge assumptions and beliefs that no longer serve them and discover what is really important to them.
I often discover that it is not unusual for senior people not to have explicit professional or personal boundaries and this is something that needs to be explored because boundaries provide a sound basis for choices and decisions that they may, up until now, have made without proper consideration as to the consequences in terms of their personal and business well-being - defined as mental, physical and spiritual.
As a mentor I share my experience where relevant and encourage the client to examine theirs in order to see what learning they can draw from it.
The purpose of mentoring is to help my clients really understand where they are now, where they want to be and what that would take to get there.
